5 Amazing Things You Can Only See In New Mexico

Posted on

Planning a vacation to New Mexico is a great idea because the state is full of natural beauty and interesting things to do. From charming towns to striking desert vistas to lush hiking trails, New Mexico is a very diverse state. When trying to narrow down your list of sights and experiences to check out, here are five amazing things that should not be missed:

International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

The Albuquerque International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is a world famous festival featuring more than 500 hot air balloons. The fiesta takes place annually in early October and is the biggest hot air balloon festival in the world. In addition to beautiful hot air balloons, the festival features live music, food vendors, and even a fireworks show. For more information, contact Fun Excursions in a Box LLC or a similar company.

Hike the Valles Caldera

The Valles Caldera is a massive (13 mile wide) circular valley created by a volcanic eruption more than one million years ago. Now filled with green meadows, scenic hiking trails, and streams, this is a gorgeous spot to hike, picnic, and even camp overnight. Other popular Valle Caldera activities include hunting, fly fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

Check Out White Sands

For a truly unique experience, bring the whole family to White Sands National Monument. Stretching out for nearly 300 square miles in the middle of the desert, this national monument features dramatic white sand dunes as far as the eye can see. Take photos, camp out, and even go sledding down the sand dunes in a round plastic saucer.

Visit the Gila Cliff Dwellings

Located in Southwestern New Mexico, the Gila Cliff Dwellings are the impressive ruins of the Mongollon Culture, which lived there in the late 1200's. In addition to checking out the actual cliff dwellings and learning about indigenous cultures of the region, this is a great area for hiking and relaxing at natural hot springs.

The Blue Hole in Santa Rosa

Known for being an excellent spot for scuba diving (which is pretty hard to come by in the Southwest), the Blue Hole is a vast, 81-feet-deep natural pool. The Blue Hole features exceptionally clear, refreshing water, making it a great spot to relax before heading back home. The Blue Hole is located in the charming small town of Santa Rosa along Route 66.

By adding these five experiences to your New Mexico itinerary, you are sure to have a memorable, fun vacation, and many amazing photos to boot.
